Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: DeVante Parker

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs filled a huge need at wide receiver when they acquired Jeremy Maclin from the Philadelphia Eagles. Now the question is do the Chiefs elect to draft a receiver in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft? If so, the best player on the board by the time they’re on the clock might be DeVante Parker out of Louisville.

Parker played for the Louisville Cardinals for four years and during that span had 156 receptions for 2,775 yards and 33 touchdowns. He actually had the least amount of touchdowns this past season (five), but the reason for the lack of play that season was due to a foot injury that sidelined him for seven games.

Combine Results

It’s obvious that this kid can play. He’s one of the best receivers on the board, and more than likely will still be on the board by the time Kansas City gets to make their first round selection.

  • 40-yard dash – 4.45 seconds
  • Bench press – 17 reps
  • Vertical jump – 36.5 inch
  • Broad jump – 125.0 inch

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compares Parker to Hakeem Nicks of the Indianapolis Colts. He says that Parker uses his height to his advantage and is great at catching basically any catch thrown in his direction.

"Parker isn’t going to overpower cornerbacks and he will have more contested catches than most explosive wideouts. He has consistently posted eye-popping yards-per-catch numbers during his time at Louisville and showed of solid athleticism at the combine. Parker has the potential to be a legitimate lead receiver for a West Coast offense."

Parker has been linked with the Kansas City Chiefs in several mock drafts, and recently showed why he’ll be a first round pick at the draft, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com.

"DeVante Parker (6-foot-2 7/8, 212 pounds) stood on his numbers from the combine and had a fabulous workout. He appears to be over the injury that caused him to miss the first half of last season, and his combine and pro-day performances have really helped him a lot. He’ll be an early first-round pick."

Bucky Brooks projected the Chiefs to take DeVante Parker in round one in his mock draft several weeks ago. He felt that Parker could be that guy to fit into Andy Reid‘s West Coast offense and ignite something special on this team. That, of course, was before the team got Maclin signed, but still. The need for another wide receiver is certainly there.

It’s obvious that this kid can play. He’s one of the best receivers on the board, and more than likely will still be on the board by the time Kansas City gets to make their first round selection. If Parker is there versus say… Landon Collins of Alabama (safety) or Andrus Peat of Stanford (offensive tackle), should the Kansas City Chiefs draft him?

The bottom line is that the Chiefs need another wide receiver to play opposite Jeremy Maclin, and DeVante Parker could be that guy.
