JERSEY NUMBERS WORTH RETIRING

#40

To my knowledge, James Hasty is the best player to wear the number 40 in a Chiefs uniform.  So no, this has nothing to do with the Chiefs but the NFL as a whole. The player that wore this jersey number was Pat Tillman.

With all the work that the NFL does with the military, one would think the NFL would have done this already. For those that don’t know, Tillman was killed in action in 2004 by friendly fire. He was a safety for the Arizona Cardinals and elected to quit playing football in 2001 to serve his country.

This pick is going to raise some eyebrows, however, this makes sense from a business perspective. Obviously, this would be a call by the NFL and not the Chiefs organization since Tillman never suited up in Kansas City.

CONCLUSION

Other numbers considered were 89 (Otis Taylor), 61 (Curly Culp) and 8 (Nick Lowery) but the Chiefs won’t retire a number until that player is inducted into Canton, so of the three listed, only Culp would qualify.

Now don’t get it confused, Taylor’s 89 is well worthy of being retired and so is Lowery’s 8, but I had to stick to those criteria. Tillman’s inclusion was strictly from an NFL point-of-view given their involvement with the military and would be a good way to honor someone who gave up the game of football for a greater cause.
