General manager Brett Veach made some difficult decisions this past week.

Not only did he let Steven Nelson, Demetrius Harris, Mitch Morse, and Chris Conley, among others, walk in free agency, he also cut high-priced veterans Berry and Houston while trading to San Francisco the recently franchised-tagged Dee Ford.

As he made those decisions, he also brought on board players who figure to play key roles in 2019.

First, he signed running back Carlos Hyde after the Jaguars released him. Next, he signed safety Tyrann Mathieu away from the Houston Texans, giving the Honey Badger a three-year deal. Then he signed ex-Saints defensive end Alex Okafor. And yesterday, he added another piece to the secondary, bringing aboard corner Bashaud Breeland, who most recently played for the Packers.

And while he swung for and missed on safety Earl Thomas, he’s put the organization in a great spot leading into the latter, less frenzied weeks of free agency. With the Ford trade, he’s also added a little more draft capital to the supply.

So far, so good.
