The Kansas City Chiefs made a move in free agency on Monday, inking cornerback Bashaud Breeland to a one-year deal. This is a great move that helps shore up the Chiefs’ shaky secondary.

When watching the Kansas City Chiefs last year, one thing was perfectly clear: The secondary was a disaster. The Chiefs have made an attempt through free agency to clean up their sloppy pass defense from last season, signing cornerback Bashaud Breeland to a one-year deal.

Last week, the Chiefs brought in safety Tyrann Mathieu. These two guys should be able to turn what was one of the worst passing defenses a year ago into at least a middle of the road unit. Fans will take that every day of the week and twice on Sunday, considering their defense doesn’t have to be great. It just needs to be average.

The Chiefs tried to bring in Breeland last year, but he ended up signing with the Packers to end the 2018 season. His 2018 season in Green Bay saw him play in seven games (starting five of them) while notching 16 tackles, four defended passes, and two interceptions.

The Chiefs have had an eventful free agency period, releasing Justin Houston and Eric Berry while trading Dee Ford to the 49ers. Signing Mathieu was a move that needed to be made and now pairing him with Breeland in the secondary should have Chiefs fans excited.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Breeland will work with Kendall Fuller, who he spent time with in Washington before Fuller was traded to KC and Breeland landed with Green Bay, as already mentioned. These two did wonders in the Redskins secondary and now have another chance to work together in Kansas City.

Cornerback looks bleak other than Fuller. Sure, Charvarius Ward had a decent rookie campaign last year, but he’s not the long-term answer. Steven Nelson landed with the Steelers in free agency, so he for sure won’t be back in a Chiefs uniform next season.

Overall, it’s hard not to like this move.

Breeland and the Chiefs seemed like a match made in heaven during the 2018 season, but he ended up not signing here for reasons unknown to any of us. This time around though, Bashaud Breeland made the right decision and is going to be a big time contributor to the Kansas City Chiefs defense in 2019.

All the Chiefs have to do in 2019 is be average on defense and their offense should be able to carry the load. We saw that when push comes to shove, the defense has to be able to make some stops in the postseason and that didn’t happen for the Chiefs last year. Hopefully these signings pan out.
