The Kansas City Chiefs could use some help in the secondary. Tre’Davious White from LSU is one of the top options in the upcoming draft.

The NFL is a passing league and the Kansas City Chiefs need to be prepared for that. KC got some much needed help in the form of Terrance Mitchell late last year. However, Mitchell only has one year left on his contract. This year’s draft class is loaded with cornerback talent and Tre’Davious White of LSU is among the absolute best.

While Marcus Peters has emerged as a lock down corner on his side of the field, his counterpart remains a question mark for the Chiefs. Terrance Mitchell is certainly the favorite to get the job this year, but as I mentioned before, he only has one year left on his contract. Will Kansas City look to extend Mitchell or are they ready to move on?

If we are to use their efforts in this year’s draft as any sort of a guide, then it is clear that the Chiefs intend on drafting a cornerback early. That is likely the path they are wanting to take for the long-term. Realistically, that makes the most sense for the team. Ultimately, Terrance Mitchell is still a journeyman, so signing him long-term doesn’t seem the most prudent move.

In the meantime, the Chiefs could have a number of quality corners for the 2017 season. That is important in today’s NFL as teams are much more inclined to throw the ball. Talented corners are starting to become a high demand group, and the days of having just two are well behind us.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

Simply put, Tre’Davious White is the kind of corner that you can stick on a corner and dare the other team to attack. He was used in a variety of coverage types at LSU, but almost always played one on one with the receiver. A deep class at cornerback is the only reason why he is being talked about as a second round pick.

Tre’Davious White is an athletic corner who shows a natural understanding of the position. Smooth runner who has the ability to change direction quickly. Solid ball skills with excellent anticipation of both the quarterback and receiver. Quality acceleration to never be left behind by a receiver.

The negatives on Tre’Davious White are a bit nit-picky, but enough to make him slide in this class. Despite good ball skills, doesn’t come away with the interception very often. A little timid against the run. Has a slender frame that some scouts don’t think he can add weight to. Anticipation can get him in trouble at times as he will bite on a good fake.

Tre’Davious White could potentially be a day one starter for a team. He has all of the skills and talent you want to see from a defensive back. There will likely be some growing pains as teams test him, but he has the right attitude for the position. He will not likely be available when the Chiefs draft in the second round, so if they like him they will have to pull the trigger early.
