2017 NFL Draft KC Chiefs Scouting Report: Patrick Mahomes

When looking at the quarterback prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft, Patrick Mahomes is one of the more impressive names. Could he be a potential target for the KC Chiefs in the first round?

Is this finally going to be the year in which the Kansas City Chiefs draft a quarterback before the fifth round? If so, I think a lot of Chiefs Kingdom would be thrilled.

If the Chiefs decided to use their first (or perhaps second) round pick on a quarterback, Patrick Mahomes could end up being one of the more realistic scenarios.

I had the Chiefs landing Mahomes in the second round of my first mock draft of the season. It seemed like a fairly reasonable pick at the time, but now… I really don’t see Mahomes or any of the four main quarterbacks (Mahomes, DeShone Kizer, Mitch Trubisky, or Deshaun Watson) making it out of the first round.

Obviously what pops out when looking at Mahomes’ draft stock are his stats. The kid put up crazy numbers at Texas Tech, throwing for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in three seasons with the Red Raiders. Freakish numbers, man.

While those numbers are probably making Chiefs fans drool, it doesn’t mean that Mahomes will transfer to the NFL and be able to continue to put up those numbers. Still though… The Red Raiders quarterback threw for 734 yards and five touchdowns in a game against the Oklahoma Sooners. Crazy!

As much as I’d love to see the KC Chiefs go after Patrick Mahomes (or just a quarterback in general), I don’t see it happening. The Chiefs aren’t the type of team to go with a flashy pick in the first round and Mahomes is about as flashy as it gets.

Recently, Patrick Mahomes has been projected to go as high as the tenth overall pick to the Buffalo Bills. One week ago, Brad Weiss of FanSided had Mahomes landing with the Bills, stating,

"At Texas Tech, Mahomes racked up some eye-popping numbers, though his critics believe that could actually hurt him. We don’t, and it would not surprise us at all if he is the first quarterback taken in April."

If the KC Chiefs want one of the prime quarterback prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft, then they’re going to have to trade up to get him. Mahomes is probably the one most likely to fall to them, but even that isn’t a guarantee.
