The KC Royals will be without starting third baseman, Mike Moustakas (Moose), for the second straight game and possibly longer.

Mike Moustakas jammed his thumb during the Angels series last week. He re-injured the thumb in Seattle vs. the Mariners over the weekend, according to Jeffrey Flanagan Royals beat reporter for MLB.com and Royals.com. He’s listed as day-to-day.

This comes at a bad time for Kansas City. The offense is struggling, putting up zero runs in three of their last four outings.

Colon’s defense isn’t the worst. He’s played at multiple positions for Kansas City, playing shortstop, second base and third base for the Royals. In just eight games, Colon had two errors while filling in for Moose last season. So far this year, in three games at third he hasn’t recorded an error.

The KC Royals could also turn to Cheslor Cuthbert at third base in the event of a prolonged injury for Mike Moustakas.

Cuthbert proved to be a valuable player for the Royals last season when he filled in for Moustakas while he was on the bereavement list. Now he may get the thumbs up, pun intended, to help the big club yet again.

It also helps that Cuthbert has been raking at Triple-A this season. The energetic young third baseman has a slash line of .321/.387/.605.

He’s also found his power stroke this season. He had 11 home runs all of last season and a slugging percentage of .421. So far this year, he’s got six home runs, a double, and a triple which has his slugging percentage at .605.

The KC Royals are in need of a spark to help drive in some runs and he may be the right man for the job. He leads the Storm Chasers with 26 RBIs in only 21 games this season. If he can provide that spark the Royals have been lacking, then this injury may just be a blessing in disguise.

It’s only the beginning of May, so getting the guys healthy is the right thing to do. The Royals have plenty of head-to-head match ups against the White Sox and Tigers to make up ground later this season and they’ll need Moose to get plenty loose in those games.

What do you think the KC Royals should do with Moose? Should they leave him in the lineup and risk further injury? Should they stick with Colon at third base? Should they give Cuthbert a shot at third and see if his hot bat can transition to the Major League level this season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments’ section below.
