The Kansas City Chiefs drafted a quarterback in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and his name is Kevin Hogan out of Stanford.

Well, folks, the sexy pick is in for the KC Chiefs. They’ve finally drafted a quarterback: Kevin Hogan out of Stanford.

While the Chiefs have an unquestioned starter in Alex Smith, this was still a nice pick by our Kansas City Chiefs. Chase Daniel is gone, but Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray are still unproven to the organization.

Hogan now provides some quarterback competition this offseason, which should prove interesting for the Chiefs.

It was only a matter of time before the Kansas City Chiefs grabbed a quarterback in this draft and now they’ve got one. There was talk that the Chiefs were interested in selecting Paxton Lynch in round one, but the Broncos traded in front of them to get him. Then in the fourth round, the Raiders traded up to get Connor Cook.

It begs the question if there was talk that Kansas City was interested in grabbing a quarterback earlier on in the draft.

More from KC Kingdom

A few days ago, I wrote up a piece on the quarterbacks I was interesting in seeing the KC Chiefs grab, and Kevin Hogan was my choice for them to select in the fifth round. I like this kid because he’s big, fast, and is the winningest quarterback in Stanford Cardinal history. Not too bad for a fifth rounder.

Adam Schefter said on the broadcast that Hogan is a great fit for the Chiefs and Mel Kiper Jr. said he couldn’t believe that he was still there. The Chiefs certainly got a steal with this one, and it’ll certainly be interesting to see what happens this summer with all of the quarterbacks on the roster.

"One could argue that no senior quarterback prospect has helped himself more this season than Hogan, who has forced NFL scouts to take second and third looks at him. Although his elongated delivery and inconsistent passing vision are concerns, he’s built for the NFL game with the toughness, heart and intangibles that teams covet at the next level. – CBS Sports"

If I had to guess, Hogan will be the future backup quarterback, and Bray and Murray will be fighting for the third spot on the roster. Murray was the Chiefs’ fifth round pick two years ago, but has only suited up once since then. Bray has also suited up once, but has seen some injuries since signing with the team after being undrafted in 2013.

Next: Quarterbacks Throughout the Years

NFL.com knocks Hogan for his footwork and also says that he needs pocket awareness. These are both fixable areas though, and Alex Smith will be a great mentor for a guy who could end up being a great quarterback for the KC Chiefs organization in years to come.

Scott Dillon nailed this pick in his “Best Available” mock draft, as he had Hogan going 162nd overall to the Chiefs. Scott liked the pick because he fits the mold of a solid NFL backup, who’s mobile and has excelled at the short passes.

I’m really freaking excited about this pick, guys. Kevin Hogan was a star at Stanford and I can’t wait to see what he brings this team in the next few years.
