The Kansas City Chiefs were recently listed among the top five teams who made the most sense for free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

Although already technically addressed with the signing of Rod Streater, the wide receiver position still remains an area of concern for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs have not expressed concerns at wide receiver following Streater’s signing, but many find it hard to believe the front office feels comfortable with the position’s current construction.

This is where a certain wide receiver named Anquan Boldin comes in.

Jamey Eisenberg of CBS Sports recently interviewed Boldin about his free agency plans.

“Boldin said his goal is to play for a team that has a chance to win,” Eisenberg said.

“And he has already visited the Redskins, who won the NFC East last season.”

Eisenberg went on to name five more possible destinations for Boldin, one of them being the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Kansas City could be poised to overtake Denver in the AFC West now that the Broncos have serious questions at quarterback,” he said.

“But the Chiefs still need to find another threat in the passing game.”

“And Boldin would be an excellent complement to Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce.”

“His stats would clearly take a downturn playing with Alex Smith, but the Chiefs should make a playoff run this year now that the division is wide open.”

If Boldin’s signing destination criteria as reported by Eiserberg are accurate, then the Kansas City Chiefs are more than capable of convincing Boldin to play alongside Maclin.

If the Kansas City Chiefs were able to make this happen, Boldin would certainly be an upgrade over Streater.

Although Streater is not a bad player, he will not create the type of mismatches Smith, Maclin, and the rest of their offense would receive from Boldin in the number two spot for the Kansas City Chiefs.

In addition, Streater has not recorded more than 84 receiving yards in a season since 2013.

Last year, Streater only had eight receiving yards in total for the entire season.

Injuries and, more recently, crowding of the depth chart played large roles in these statistical craters.

Even so, Boldin still managed to gain 789 receiving yards and score four touchdown receptions in just 13 starts last season.

Also, keep in mind that last season Colin Kaepernick was ranked 29th among all quarterbacks last season in total QBR according to Football Outsiders.

Despite all this, Boldin still managed to score a respectable rating of 79.6 by Pro Football Focus last season.

At age 35, Boldin is not a young wide receiver, but, at 36, Steve Smith Sr. has emphatically debunked popular belief regarding receivers in their mid-thirties by continuing to produce.

In addition, the Kansas City Chiefs may face fierce competition from two fellow teams on Eisenberg’s list in the Cincinatti Bengals or New England Patriots.

Despite these teams’ perennial success, these teams are not without their respective downsides when compared to the Kansas City Chiefs.

To put it shortly, the Bengals have yet to prove they can advance anywhere in the playoffs.

As for the Patriots, there is no guarantee Boldin will be able to find a place in their offense, especially with the additions of Chris Hogan, Martellus Bennett, and Nate Washington.

The last obstacle the Kansas City Chiefs would have to overcome in order to sign Boldin would be their salary cap.

According to Spotrac, as of April 14th, the Kansas City Chiefs only have about $548,172 in cap room to spend on free agents if they intend to sign all of their draft picks.

As a result, the Kansas City Chiefs would most likely have to free up cap space to sign Boldin.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports reported that this probably will not happen until after the 2016 NFL Draft when contract negotiations regarding Eric Berry‘s extension begin.

The Kansas City Chiefs could still agree in principle to a deal with Boldin in order to lock down his services before another Super Bowl contender makes a better offer.

It is most definitely possible for the Kansas City Chiefs to sign Boldin, and he would also most definitely constitute an upgrade for the Kansas City Chiefs at the number two receiver spot.
