NFL free agency is getting closer for the KC Chiefs and someone they should take a look at signing is former New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a big move last offseason by acquiring Jeremy Maclin from the Philadelphia Eagles. Maclin flourished in his first year as a Chief, and the only thing that would make things better for him is to give him a solid number two receiver to play with.

While Chris Conley and Albert Wilson both showed flashes of potential at times last year (and the year before for Wilson), neither are a legitimate number two receiver in the NFL yet. Marques Colston could be that number two guy in Kansas City.

Colston, drafted in the seventh round out of Hofstra (who don’t even have a football team anymore) ten years ago, played in New Orleans for his entire career. He totaled 9,759 receiving yards and 72 touchdowns in ten seasons in the black and gold.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it has been stated that the New Orleans Saints are going to release Marques Colston this offseason.

The reasons why the Saints are parting ways with Colston are due to money issues (Drew Brees is an expensive player) and the up and coming wide receivers they have there in Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead. In fact, Colston only started in five games last year and had 520 yards with four touchdowns.

Colston is also the leader in receiving yards in New Orleans, so we know he’s still got the chops.

The big thing that might scare people away from Colston is his age. He’ll turn 33 in June, but we’ve seen older receivers go out and ball before. The Saints struggled as a whole last year, and by no means was it Colston’s fault why the team struggled and posted a second straight 7-9 record.

New Orleans has been forced to cut ties with Colston due to cap issues, but he could very well have a place in Kansas City. This is a team that’s just a few more players away from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and who wouldn’t want to be apart of that?

Colston hasn’t been linked with many NFL teams at this point, but Ryan Rosko over at Factory of Sadness said that the Browns should consider adding him.

"If Colston were to be a member of the Cleveland Browns, and as long as he comes in and gives solid production (rather than feeling obligated to be the top target), Colston could be more successful than some may believe. Should such an approach be carried out that way, then that is all we could ask of him."

This is a similar to how I feel about Colston (only swap Cleveland Browns for Kansas City Chiefs). He could be a huge addition to a team on the rise, and could very well be the missing piece of the puzzle.
