KC Chiefs News: John Dorsey And Clark Hunt

facebooktwitterreddit

Today’s KC Chiefs news focuses on general manager John Dorsey and Chiefs’ owner Clark Hunt.

John Dorsey heads into his fourth off-season as the general manager of the KC Chiefs. While he has some work to do in regards to solidifying his team, he’s got a good start.

The Chiefs are coming off their first playoff win in 22 years and many of the players that John Dorsey brought in played a big role in that. What he is able to do in this off-season will be an attempt to take the team to the next level.

The Chiefs have several free agents including key players like Eric Berry and Derrick Johnson. Dorsey will have to weigh his options with all of the free agent players to determine if re-signing them is worth it or if he should seek potentially less expensive options.

He may also be able to fill some of the holes left by free agency via the draft. Dorsey has done well in his short stint as general manager in drafting some big contributors for the Chiefs.

Travis Kelce is one of those picks and he’s turned into one of the premier tight ends in football. He also brought in Marcus Peters in Mitch Morse in last years draft. Both players have already solidified themselves as building blocks.

The Chiefs are on the brink of being a contender if they can maneuver this off-season carefully. They have to be careful to fill the holes in the defense and offensive line while still making sure the team has the financial flexibility to have sustained success.

They have a quarterback in Alex Smith who’s very capable of navigating a team to the Super Bowl. He nearly did that for the 49ers but was upended by some poor special teams’ play. If Super Bowl 50 proved anything, it’s that less than stellar quarterback play can still net a championship.

"Since the arrival of Andy Reid and John Dorsey, the Kansas City Chiefs have pushed the philosophy of building through the draft and signing undrafted free agents. After their third year together the Chiefs have a combined 32-18 record including the playoffs and are enjoying success from the top to the bottom of their roster. A rookie of the year in Marcus Peters and undrafted role players like Charcandrick West and Albert Wilson show that the philosophy is working."

It seems Clark Hunt is plenty optimistic about his team and he has every reason to be.

The Chiefs played inspired football down the stretch. If the Chiefs can come out and play from their opening drive as they did in 11 of their previous 12 games, they could be tough to beat next year.

Twice they held the Super Bowl champions on the ropes as year and they let a big lead slip away in their first meeting. There is no reason the Chiefs can’t muster up two wins against the defending champions next season and win the division for the first time since 2010.

If the Chiefs can have another successful draft this year and perhaps lock up some of their free agents, they’ll be in great position when the season starts. John Dorsey has done well so far in his time as general manager. Will this be the off-season that seems him put the Chiefs over the top?
