Missouri Tigers: Chase Daniel To Be Inducted Into Mizzou Hall Of Fame

facebooktwitterreddit

Chase Daniel has done a lot for the state of Missouri and now he’s being rewarded for it. Daniel will be inducted into the Missouri Tigers Hall of Fame on Friday night.

Chase Daniel attended the University of Missouri from 2005-2008. He was a backup his freshman year behind Brad Smith (who is currently a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles) and didn’t start for the Tigers until his sophomore season in 2006. He threw for 3,527 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions during the 2006 season.

Daniel kept getting better and his junior year showed just that. He passed for 4,306 yards and only 11 interceptions and also rushed for four touchdowns. Daniel led the Missouri Tigers to a blowout win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Cotton Bowl that year and he was up for the Heisman Trophy as well, coming in fourth.

  • Daniel’s senior season consisted of him throwing for 4,335 yards, 39 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Despite the success Daniel sustained while a member of Mizzou’s football team, he went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft. Daniel’s height seemed to be one of the bigger concerns for teams, but eventually he signed with the Washington Redskins. He didn’t last past the final cuts.

Fortunately things got better for Chase Daniel as far as the NFL went. He remained apart of the New Orleans Saints for several seasons, was a member of the Super Bowl winning squad (despite not being on the field during the season) and officially became Drew Brees‘ backup in the 2010 season.

Daniel stayed with the Saints until the end of the 2012 season, seeing limited action. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2013 off season and was named the immediate backup to newly signed quarterback Alex Smith.

During his two years with the Chiefs, Daniel has started in two games, going 1-1 overall. Both match ups were against the San Diego Chargers and both were in the final week of the season. In 2013, Daniel got the nod to start since the Chiefs already clinched the highest possible berth they could in the playoffs and Andy Reid elected to rest the starters. In 2014, Smith had a lacerated spleen and had to sit out the final game of the season, giving Daniel his second career start.

  • During those two starts, Daniel had a total of 357 passing yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and an extra 70 yards with his legs. Daniel led the Chiefs to a win in the season finale against the Chargers, meaning Kansas City was able to sweep San Diego for the first time since 2003.

Daniel has one year left on his contract for the Kansas City Chiefs, but it’s a strong possibility that he might be headed to a different team this off season. Daniel is one of the more expensive backup quarterbacks in the league and the Chiefs need money to acquire players in other positions they need an upgrade at.

One thing is for sure though, Chase Daniel will always be admired in the state of Missouri. Congratulations Chase!
