Targets for Round Three (Pick 96)

Round two was the money range for cornerback and interior offensive line, round three is the round where you could see a lot of linebacker value.  If Murray and Queen are gone in the first round, this is the round that we could most likely see the Chiefs target a linebacker.

1. Thaddeus Moss, TE LSU

Moss, as you probably know by now, is the son of the great Randy Moss so he has receiving in his blood. However, where Moss will really make his money is the ability to be a complete tight end. He showed his willingness to block at LSU, so this combined with his receiving abilities could make him a solid TE2 in the NFL with starter upside.

2. Akeem Davis-Gaither, LB Appalachian State

Davis-Gaithers could be the linebacker Chiefs Kingdom has been begging for as a linebacker who won’t be a liability on passing downs. He’s a smaller linebacker, which isn’t typically the Steve Spagnuolo mold for a linebacker, but he’s really not any smaller than Queen.

Like Queen, he has a chance to be excellent in coverage and has potential in the run game as well. Maybe Veach can talk Spagnolo into Davis-Gaithers with the hopes of him putting on a little weight and becoming and three-down linebacker.

3. Troy Dye, LB Oregon

You’ll start to see a pattern here. Dye is another linebacker how doesn’t have the typical Spagnuolo frame. He needs to put on some weight but has coverage abilities and scouts like his football IQ. Dye could be the Chiefs’ three-down weakside linebacker of the future.

4. Willie Gay, LB Mississippi State

Breaking a trend here with Gay, he actually is a guy with the size that Spagnuolo is more likely to get behind. Gay is what I like to think of as the Kenneth Murray of round three. Obviously he is a much less polished version, but athletically he is very comparable, actually finishing with a slightly better 40-time, vertical, and broad jump.

Gay isn’t going to have quite the upside in pass coverage as the two mentioned before him, but he does have potential there and is more likely to be a do it all linebacker. He needs to play more disciplined, but if he can do that he could have Murray-type upside in the future.

5. Ben Bredeson, G Michigan

Bredeson is another guy who was featured in the Chiefs Draft Big Board 1.0 as a third-round target. He has good size and strength and pairs it nicely with mobility. As I mention in the first version of my Chiefs draft big board, Mel Kiper said early on in the offseason that Bredeson could be the best guard in the draft, which would be a nice value in round three.
