Win and you’re in. Those are some of the most sought after words to hear in the world of sports. For the Kansas City Chiefs, it means a possible break for the starters, meaning fans may get the chance to finally see Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one win away from securing the AFC West. If that win comes this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, we should see many starters sit, including Alex Smith. This means that Chiefs Kingdom will finally get to see Patrick Mahomes in a game that means something against Denver in week 17, even though the game wouldn’t really mean anything.

It’s been one heck of a ride for the Chiefs this season. An incredible start to 2017 followed by a serious string of losses to still being in the driver seat at this juncture. When the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes in this years draft, the Smith era was nearing its end. Alex Smith responded by putting up MVP type numbers the first five weeks of the season. To date this has been Smith’s best season of his career.

During that string of losses and the few games where Smith seemed to struggle, the Mahomes faithful came out in droves wanting a change at quarterback. Again, Smith responded. Now the Chiefs are looking to the Dolphins game as the one that seals the deal.

If the Chiefs are victorious against Miami, their fate doesn’t change no matter what the Chiefs do. They will be the AFC West champs for the second straight year and first time in franchise history. This means their first game of the playoffs will be at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Dolphins should put up a decent fight in this one. So far this season they have beaten the likes of the Chargers, Falcons, Titans and Patriots. All of those teams are in the playoff hunt if not already assured a spot.

If the defense for Kansas City can keep up the killer attitude and the offense can continue to find their balance between the run and passing games, the end result should be a home win for the Chiefs.

The future on display

It doesn’t matter what the situation might be, Chiefs fans want to see what Mahomes has to offer. His place at the table is already set, he will be the Chiefs starter in 2018. His teammates love him, the city loves him, and fans of the long ball love him.

The comparisons to Brett Favre are warranted, and exciting. Patrick Mahomes is a wild child just like Brett was. He’s a gunslinger. He has the strongest arm in the NFL as far as how deep down field he can throw, and he has the legs and the speed to get him out of trouble.

So this game might just have some extra meaning to it, knowing we all will get the chance to see the gunslinger in action one more time before he is handed the keys.
