Will Barry Odom find himself on the hot seat?

First and foremost, no, Barry Odom is not on the hot seat at this time. In fact, if the Missouri Tigers keep winning, there’s no reason to believe he will be any time soon.

On the flip side of that coin, if the Tigers begin losing despite that hot offense, then Odom will very much begin feeling the pressure.

The simple fact of the matter is that Barry Odom is the head coach, as well as the play caller on defense. Therefore, all shortcomings on defense fall directly at his feet. Props go out to Odom for expressing as much.

There are plenty of excuses the team can point to for last week’s defensive performance. It was the first game of the season. MU was playing a FCS team. The team stopped playing hard once the game seemed to be in hand. The Tigers didn’t want to give away too much of their defensive package this early.

All of that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the Missouri Tigers defense seemed very much overmatched by an inferior Missouri State offense.

Hopefully, Odom and defensive coordinator, DeMontie Cross, spent most of this week working on a fail-safe defensive plan designed to keep South Carolina from scoring this week. All I know is that I want to believe the Mizzou defense that showed up last week is not what we can expect to see during the rest of 2017.

The truth is that if Mizzou football gets halfway through this season and the defense is still performing like this, it’s only a matter of time until fans are calling for a change.

Until then, let’s all hope for a rousing Tigers victory over South Carolina this weekend that puts all questions to rest.
