One of the biggest Royals rumors floating around at the moment is the Kansas City Royals being interested in Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon. It might seem unlikely, but the move could make perfect sense for this club.

When the Royals rumors of Dee Gordon coming to Kansas City first started drifting out there in rumor land, I rolled my eyes a bit. Gordon just isn’t the type of player who ends up coming to Kansas City to play for the Royals.

After thinking more about the potential trade, however, it actually makes sense for this move to go down, if it does go down.

For one, Dee Gordon is an incredible ball player. That’s evident by his career slash line of .290/.327/.363 over seven years time split between the Dodgers and Marlins. Gordon is currently batting .295 with the Miami Marlins, but doesn’t have a home run on his resumé yet this year.

Another big thing to note with this trade is that Dee Gordon won’t be a free agent after 2017. If the Royals took on this trade, they’d have Gordon under club control through 2021. This is a guy who has the ability to play both second base and shortstop.

Now I know a lot of you are probably wondering just why the Kansas City Royals are looking into adding a second baseman. It’s not necessarily a knock on Whit Merrifield, but more of what Gordon could provide in the future for this team that could look quite different after the final pitch of 2017 is thrown.

If the Royals traded for Dee Gordon, he’d likely take over at second base this season and Merrifield would be moved to the outfield. After 2017, Gordon could be the new shortstop of the team, as Alcides Escobar will be a free agent and has (for the most part) underwhelmed this season. Merrifield could then be slotted back in at second base.

If Gordon took over as the future shortstop, that’d also open up the possibility of trading Raul Mondesi Jr. Mondesi hasn’t looked good during his time in the big leagues, but is still considered to be a top prospect in the Royals farm system. He could be the perfect trading piece in this puzzle to acquire Dee Gordon.

The biggest question, however, is Gordon’s current salary. The Marlin is only in year two of a five-year deal worth $50 million and we all know that the Royals aren’t about taking on more hard hitting contracts at this point; Not with key free agents like Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas to attempt to re-sign.

At the end of the day, I don’t see the KC Royals actually making this rumor become a reality. Originally I laughed at the notion of this even being a rumor, but considering what Dee Gordon could provide not only this year, but for the next three years, the Royals would be foolish not to at least consider making this deal.

Do you see any chance that the Royals trade for Dee Gordon?
