Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp Preview

Patrick Mahomes – Quarterback

Yes, that is the Kansas City Chiefs brand new first round quarterback sitting in the #3 spot on the roster. No, that is not a bad sign, nor is it unexpected really. The Chiefs are going to make Patrick Mahomes earn every step forward, which is absolutely the right thing to do.

The first thing on Pat Mahomes’s “to-do” list is going to be beating out Tyler Bray for the backup job. That is easier said than done as Bray has spent four years in the Chiefs offense, and has already earned one contract renewal. This is not a “gimme” for Mahomes by any means.

However, that is not to say that Patrick Mahomes is going to be stuck in his current spot for long. The big-armed quarterback has reportedly been impressive early on, and is getting good reviews from the team. Of course, the same can be said of just about every rookie quarterback in the history of the NFL.

Andy Reid has tied his future to Patrick Mahomes though, and that means the rookie will get every advantage he can. The Chiefs have actually assembled quite an interesting coaching staff for helping quarterbacks develop. Reid, of course, has his own reputation. However, both offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka played under Reid.

Prediction:

Patrick Mahomes will absolutely make the Kansas City Chiefs roster this year. That’s not up for debate. However, where he lands on the depth chart is very much in question right now. I’m going to go ahead and say that Mahomes earns the top backup job coming out of camp. However, if the Chiefs need a starter for several games, they may go to Tyler Bray instead.
