The Good: The Kicking Game and Defense

There wasn’t much good to take away from this game. The most impressive thing to happen offensively for the KC Chiefs was the kicking accuracy of the kicker, Cairo Santos and punter, Dustin Colquitt.

Santos drilled four of four field goal attempts in the dome. He scored all 12 points for the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s actually a sad statement when the kicker scores the only points, the offense has a serious problem. Santos booted one through the uprights from 53-yards away tying a career long.

Dustin Colquitt continues his punting clinic. He boomed six punts for 45.5 average yards per punt and a 57-yard devastation. He nailed three of the six punts inside the Houston Texans 20-yard line. This is huge this season since touchbacks are now brought out to the 25-yard line.

Colquitt makes it harder on the other team to start with good field position putting stress on the opposing team’s offense to sustain a drive to score points on the Chiefs defense.

Speaking of the defense. The unit had a solid afternoon. Cornerback Marcus Peters picked off Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler twice. Peters also allowed a few big plays but the interceptions make those sting a little less.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The pass rush showed up sporadically on Sunday. Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali both amassed one sack a piece on Osweiler. The Kansas City Chiefs defense held the Texans to 19 points which are slightly better than 27 given up the week before against the Chargers.

The Chiefs held the Texans running backs to 102 yards on the day on 31 rushing attempts for 3.3 yards per rush average. Kansas City didn’t let Houston score a rushing touchdown in the game. The only touchdown the defense gave up was to DeAndre Hopkins on a swim move he put on Peters clearing a path to the end zone for six points.

The Chiefs will need to clean put the passing defense a little bit. The unit allowed two receivers to eclipse the 100-yard mark. Hopkins caught seven passes for 113 yards and a score and Will Fuller added 104 yards on four catches of his own.
