Week 7: Chiefs at Chargers (Chiefs won 23-20)

Both games against the San Diego Chargers were ones to remember for the Chiefs. As I mentioned on the previous slide, the Chiefs were able to sweep the Chargers for the first time since 2003.

To put that into perspective, Kansas City hadn’t swept the bolts since Drew Brees was in his third year as the Chargers’ starting quarterback, and Trent Green was still the Chiefs’ guy under center.

The sweeping began in the two teams’ first showdown, which took place in week seven, one week after the KC Chiefs’ bye week. Andy Reid has built up an impressive record throughout his career of wins after the bye week, but fans still weren’t sure how the Chiefs would fare against the Chargers in 2014.

Both teams had made it into the postseason the year before, and the Chargers even advanced into the divisional round. After starting the season on fire, the Chargers lost their first game since week one when the Kansas City Chiefs rolled into town.

The Chargers were on the board first at the end of the first quarter when Philip Rivers hit John Phillips (who?) for a one-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs tied things up on the very first play of the second quarter when Jamaal Charles booked it 16 yards into the end zone.

Kansas City’s next possession ended with a Cairo Santos field goal to give the Chiefs the lead, but Rivers hurled another touchdown right before the half to make it a 14-10 game at half time.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Santos kicked another field goal on Kansas City’s opening half drive, and the Chiefs added to that when Alex Smith hit fullback Anthony Sherman for an 11-yard touchdown pass. It was 20-14 Kansas City.

After tacking on two Nick Novak field goals, it was all tied up in San Diego. With 26 seconds remaining, Cairo Santos kicked the game winning field goal from 48 yards out to lead the Chiefs to their third victory of the season.

The best part about the game was when Cairo Santos was able to prove everyone wrong when he booted the game winning field goal. Santos didn’t have a good start to the season so I think it’s safe to say that we all were nervous when he took the field for this field goal attempt.

Santos prevailed though, and it was the first time the Kansas City Chiefs had prevailed over the Chargers in San Diego since 2007.

The win was crucial, as at that point in the season the Chiefs sat with a 2-3 record and desperately needed a win to remain competitive in the AFC West. Fortunately, Santos came through in the end and the Chiefs went on to win 23-20.

This began the five game winning streak for the Chiefs.
