Week 17: Chiefs VS Chargers (Chiefs won 19-7)

The final week of the NFL season posed a difficult task for the Kansas City Chiefs. With Alex Smith out due to a lacerated spleen, it was up to Chase Daniel to lead the Chiefs to victory. In fact, a win was virtually the only way the Chiefs would make it into the postseason.

It just so happens that the San Diego Chargers were rolling into town, and all the Chargers had to do to punch their ticket into the playoffs was to beat the Chiefs. Seemed easy for Philip Rivers and company considering they were facing a Smith-less Kansas City squad for the second year in a row, and again… All they had to do was win, and they’d be in the postseason.

The Chiefs struck first on their first drive of the game with a Cairo Santos field goal, and later scored in a rather strange touchdown. Daniel threw a touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe, which would have meant a Chiefs wide receiver caught a touchdown pass, but Bowe fumbled the ball. Travis Kelce then scooped it up and therefore received credit for the touchdown.

  • The Chargers broke their silence though, and put up six after Branden Oliver ran it into the end zone to make it a 10-7 game in the second quarter.

Santos kicked two field goals and the score was 16-7 in favor of the good guys going into the half. The third quarter ended up being the last time either team would score when Santos kicked yet another field goal to put the Chiefs up by 12.

The Chargers tried putting drives together, but that Oliver touchdown was the only set of points the bolts would see all day. The Chiefs defense completely dominated San Diego’s offense, sacking cry baby Rivers seven times and picking him off on the final Chargers drive to put the game away and keep the Chargers out of the playoffs.

This game was great for a lot of reasons.

    1. San Diego didn’t make the playoffs
    2. Kansas City swept the Chargers for the first time since 2003
    3. Any time we get to watch Philip Rivers throw a hissy fit on the sideline is great

Despite winning this game, the Chiefs did not make the postseason, as the Baltimore Ravens went on to beat the Cleveland Browns and get that final Wildcard spot.

It was nice to see the Chiefs take care of business against the Chargers in 2014. This game could be considered payback for the season prior when the Chargers swept the Chiefs, and undeservingly won the final game of the season and made it into the playoffs as a result. Thanks Succop (I’m still a little bitter about that if you couldn’t tell).

Plus… Seeing Philip Rivers cry and throw temper tantrums on the sideline is always hilarious.
