The KC Chiefs closed out the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by selecting safety Leon McQuay III with the 218th overall pick. McQuay attended USC for four years.

Potentially making their final pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs added help in the secondary with the selection of Leon McQuay III out of Southern California. While safety wasn’t a huge need for the Chiefs, by the time you hit the later rounds, the picks are all about adding depth.

Right now at the safety spot, the Chiefs have Eric Berry, who they just inked to a six-year deal, Ron Parker, Daniel Sorensen, and Eric Murray. It’s a talented group and most of these guys are under contract for several years in the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

During his time with the Trojans, McQuay had 123 total tackles, 16 defended passes, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. McQuay didn’t get a chance to be a full-time starter until this past season, where he fared nicely with 50 tackles and two picks en route to a USC appearance and victory in the Rose Bowl.

"If he tests well, teams may see McQuay has a hybrid corner/safety who can compete for a spot as a big cover defender in sub-packages."

As of now, this is the final selection for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft. The team did not draft a cornerback even with how stacked this class was. That’s a bit surprising to me, but the Chiefs obviously feel confident in Marcus Peters, Terrance Mitchell, and Steven Nelson holding down the fort moving forward. That’s a good sign from the organization, that they trust their guys.

I will say that a safety pick isn’t what I was expecting, but perhaps Leon McQuay III can jump in and be a great special teams guy and eventually rotate into the secondary.

Welcome to Kansas City, Leon McQuay!
