KC Chiefs: Aaron Murray Could Be On His Way Out

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs play their third preseason game on Saturday afternoon. Could it be the last one for quarterback Aaron Murray?

When Aaron Murray joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014 after being their fifth-round pick that year, the excitement level with the fans was through the roof.

Murray had been an incredibly talented quarterback during his days as a Georgia Bulldog. Had he decided to forego his senior season and enter the NFL Draft at the end of the 2012 season, the former Bulldog probably would have gone number one overall to the Chiefs.

So, in other words, it seemed like destiny for Aaron Murray to wind up in Kansas City.

When he took the field for the first time in 2014, Chiefs fans in the stands were stoked (myself included). “This could be our future guy”, a lot of them were probably thinking.

Instead, the Murray hype has disappeared.

At one time, this was the guy that Chiefs fans wanted to be the quarterback of the future once Alex Smith decided to hang up the cleats (or just moved on from Kansas City). With Chase Daniel leaving after the 2015 season, it seemed evident that 2016 would be Murray’s time to backup Smith and really start the learning process.

Daniel did sign elsewhere, but the Chiefs extended Tyler Bray and drafted Kevin Hogan in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, which sent a wave of confusion throughout Chiefs Kingdom.

To add insult to injury, the KC Chiefs brought on Nick Foles this offseason. It seemed apparent before acquiring Foles that Bray and Murray were going to duke it out for the backup spot and whoever lost would be off the team (Hogan would more than likely earn the third-string spot due to being a rookie).

Even when Murray had a chance to pass Bray while the former undrafted quarterback was out with an injury, Murray went back to sitting behind him on the depth chart. Unfortunately, it just seems like this is how it’s going to go with Aaron Murray in Kansas City.

A guy who was once thought to be the quarterback of the future is now likely going to be the first quarterback let go this preseason. While it’d be nice to trade the former college star, I don’t see the pool of teams wanting to trade for him being all that big.

In two preseason games so far, Murray has gone 8 for 14 for 110 yards, which aren’t mind blowing stats by any means. He also had three fumbles in the game against the Rams.

Even though I’m rooting for the Chiefs to keep Murray (maybe Bray’s injury history becomes a concern or Hogan just is too much of a rookie), I have a feeling he’ll be taking his last few snaps as a Chief this weekend.

That’s too bad too. It would have been exciting to watch Murray progress right here in Kansas City.

Oh well. Had Murray been on the field playing this season regardless, something would have had to have gone wrong with Alex Smith, and that’s one of the last things we want this season for our Kansas City Chiefs.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Do you think Aaron Murray will be the first quarterback let go or will he remain with the team?
