The Kansas City Chiefs are all about adding to their incredible defense. That’s why Lance Zierlein of NFL.com had them selecting Shaq Lawson in the first round of his latest mock draft.

Ahhh, NFL draft season. A time where fans can dream about their favorite NFL team (or teams in my case) drafting any player imaginable. It’s a great time of the year.

The Los Angeles Rams added some juice to this year’s draft when they traded almost EVERYTHING to the Tennessee Titans for the number one overall pick. It’s obvious that the Rams are trying to find a franchise quarterback and gave up a lot of picks and future talent to land that guy. No pressure to whoever goes there number one overall.

What will our beloved Kansas City Chiefs do though?

There isn’t much talk about the KC Chiefs in the draft. Whether that be because they’re not a team in California or New York or because they’re a very late pick in the first round, we won’t know.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, however, has published his most recent mock draft and he has the KC Chiefs going with Shaq Lawson out of Clemson.

"Lawson isn’t a classic edge rusher in terms of speed around the corner, but he’s very physical and plays with outstanding football awareness and instincts. Even if Justin Houston makes it back for this season, Lawson could be the future replacement for Tamba Hali."

I would be okay with this pick.

More from KC Kingdom

Sure, Lawson doesn’t fill an immediate need (like at wide receiver, cornerback, etc), but like Zierlein said, he could be the future after Tamba Hali’s days are numbered. He also just adds depth to a Kansas City defense that was ferocious last year, and having a good defense wins teams championships, as we saw when the hated Denver Broncos took home the Lombardi Trophy in February (ugh…).

Lawson was originally slated to be an early first round pick, but with the sexy picks like quarterback and wide receiver having several options in the first round, don’t be surprised if Lawson does indeed fall to pick 28. This would not be a shocking pick by any means and just screams “John Dorsey type pick”.

Since Dorsey arrived in 2013, he’s taken two defensive players in the first round and only one offensive. That offensive player was Eric Fisher, who the team took number one overall in 2013 (that draft was terrible). The two defensive players were Dee Ford and Marcus Peters.

If history is an indication of anything, Dorsey likes going defense in the first round. Expect 2016 to be no different.
