The Kansas City Royals have a unique system when it comes to who is on their 25-man roster. Not many teams would have a guy there purely for speed, but it wins the Royals games.

Only six games into the regular MLB season and the KC Royals have already won a game due to having speed. It was on Sunday against the Twins where “That’s what speed do” surfaced for the first time this season, only this time in the form of speedy pinch runner Terrance Gore.

What happened was the Royals were tied 3-3 with Minnesota heading into extra innings. Christian Colon got a four-pitch walk and was immediately subbed out for Gore. Gore put pressure on Twins reliever Trevor May, who ended up throwing the ball away when he tried to throw to first.

From there, Gore darted from first base to third base and there were no outs. The Royals almost stranded Gore at third base, but May threw a wild pitch and Gore was able to dash home and get the boys in blue the win and ultimately the sweep against Minnesota.

It’s reasons like this that Terrance Gore should remain on the Kansas City Royals’ roster when Jarrod Dyson returns. He won the Royals the game on Sunday, and that’s something the team should keep in mind when making the decision as to who should get sent down to the minors.

It’s been said that once Dyson returns that Gore will be the easy option to send down, but why? He brings something to the team that won’t be there once he leaves. Sure, Dyson is fast, but he’ll be in right field most of the time.

Why keep both Paulo Orlando and Reymond Fuentes once Dyson returns? If the Royals are going to platoon Dyson and someone else in right field, why keep three right fielders on the roster? Wouldn’t it make more sense for either Fuentes or Orlando to be sent to the minors and keep Gore, who brings something that the team could use every day?

Now I get eventually sending Gore down when the time comes to add another pitcher, but for the time being, the Royals don’t need to have three potential right fielders on the big league roster. Keep Dyson when he’s healthy and then either Fuentes or Orlando (I’d vote Orlando personally just since we know what he can do; Give Fuentes more at-bats in the minors).

Terrance Gore adds an element to the KC Royals that not a lot of teams have. This is a huge advantage and is one the Royals should keep on the roster as long as possible.

We’ve already seen Gore win the Royals a game. Aside from Dyson (and maybe Orlando), who else could do what Gore did on Sunday? That right there is why he should stay on the big league roster for the time being.
