Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on Chiefs’ running back Jamaal Charles among other things.

With Jamaal Charles set to make over five million dollars next season there was some speculation that the Chiefs may cut him this off-season. The basic thought process was that saving cap room by eliminating Charles could help return some of the key defensive free agents.

Although it’s hard to imagine parting ways with Jamaal Charles, who leads the chiefs in all-time rushing yards, the logic was certainly sound enough. Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware both filled in adequately for the Chiefs last season.

Charles is also getting up there in age in terms of running backs and coming off his second ACL surgery. It would appear that not even that can slow him down.

Adam Teicher, a staff write for ESPN.com wrote the following yesterday:

"The Chiefs have no plans to release running back Jamaal Charles, general manager John Dorsey said, repeating his earlier claim. Dorsey said Charles was ahead of schedule in his rehab after tearing his ACL last season. “Before I left to come here to Indianapolis, I saw Jamaal out there diligently working out in the training room and all of a sudden I come back downstairs and he’s in the weight room,” Dorsey said.More from Kansas City ChiefsHow to Bet on the Chiefs vs. Cardinals in NFL Preseason Week 2The 3 Most Intriguing Games on the Chiefs’ ScheduleDraftKings + FanDuel Kansas Promos: INSTANT $150 Bonus Plus Two Chances to Win!Fan-Favorite Locks Up Chiefs Roster Spot With Stellar Preseason PerformanceDraftKings NFL Kansas Promo: Bet $5 on Chiefs vs. Saints, Win $150 Bonus!"

This virtually puts to rest any speculation about Jamaal Charles taking his talents somewhere else next season. If he really is ahead of schedule and is able to play at full strength next year, the Chiefs’ offense could be very dangerous.

Alex Smith and Jeremy Maclin got their timing down towards the end of last season. Chris Conley came on a little bit towards the end of the year. Travis Kelce is going to provide plenty of targets and make big plays. Charles is going to give the offense an extra boost. If nothing else, the other targets could open running lanes.

2016 NFL Free Agency: Who Will Derrick Johnson Sign With [Nathaniel Reeves: FanSided]

"Johnson has stated that he wants to remain with Kansas City, and franchise tagging Berry or Smith while retaining him on a short contract makes sense for the team. There’s a good chance that a deal gets done, but the Chiefs won’t bring Johnson back at the expense of losing one of their younger free agents."

Chiefs To Meet With Berry’s Agent At Combine [Tyler Conway: Bleacher Report]

The Chiefs have a number of questions to answer in regards to departing free agents. Eric Berry, Sean Smith, and Derrick Johnson are just a few of the names who could be on the way out.

In the links above, John Dorsey addresses several of these players. In regards to Derrick Johnson, Dorsey is said to “not have interest in letting good players go”.

Berry’s agent is going to be talked to at the combine this weekend, but if nothing get’s worked out it is likely the Chiefs will use the franchise tag on him. It would allow them to work on a long term contract for Berry but would prevent them from using it to retain a different player like Sean Smith or Jaye Howard.

John Dorsey has proven adequate at managing cap space and still running out a competitive football team in his three years in Kansas City. He’ll do so again this off-season as the Chiefs look to win the west for the first time since 2010.
