If there is a Royals rumor that looks to be true and it should make everyone very happy! The KC Royals have reportedly re-signed Alex Gordon!

Royals rumors at their very best – it is being reported the Kansas City Royals are bringing back their four-time Gold Glove outfielder. Alex Gordon, who has been a key part of this organization since being selected second overall in the 2005 Draft.

It appears as if Gordon will get at least four more years with the Royals and will be nicely compensated.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweeted out the possible deal this morning:

If this deal is for four seasons and worth a total of $72 million, Gordon will earn and average of $18 million a year.

Royals fans are going to rejoice at this news because many had resigned themselves to the fact that Gordon had played his last game for the team. Last week, John Heyman of CBS Sports reported that as things stood at that time, the Royals had “no chance” to re-sign their star.

"The Royals have been told by Alex Gordon‘s camp that, as things currently stand, they have “no chance” to retain star left fielder Alex Gordon, sources said. Things obviously can change in free agency, but it’s clear at this point that there’s at least a wide gap in talks regarding the longtime Royals outfielder."

Gordon denied that report, and obviously, things changed a bit if he has indeed signed a new deal to stay in Kansas City. This deal could mean that Gordon plays out the rest of his career for the KC Royals.

The real question becomes if the Royals overpaid for Alex Gordon.

The left fielder turns 32 next month and has suffered two injuries over the last two seasons. Gordon plays hard every day; he runs into walls, dives after balls, and occasionally, ends up in crowds. This style of play will lead to wrist and groin injuries as it did.

While Gordon isn’t the rah-rah type, he does lead by example. He keeps himself in tip-top shape, which should help prolong his career, and he hustles like a demon. These things should help younger players see how a professional should prepare and take care of himself, and how to play on the field.

Statistically, Gordon is no offensive star, but he is a solid at the plate. His career average is only .269, and he averages just 15 home runs a season, but he is the Royals’ best at getting on base consistently. He holds a career mark of .348 in On Base Percentage.

Gordon shines defensively, earning four Gold Gloves since moving to left field midway through 2010. If not for his injury last season, he probably would have earned a fifth. With Lorenzo Cain in center, little will get by these two in the outfield.

The left fielder is also a three-time All-Star, and not just because the Royals needed a representative. He is a good all-around ball player, and fans love him. They wanted him to be back with this team, and now, they can celebrate his return.

This signing returns a key piece of the Royals championship roster to his rightful place. They still have some work to do, but you have to wonder if this signing will take the team out of the running for some of the better players still available.

The KC Royals still need help for right field, despite their apparent willingness to let Jarrod Dyson play every day. They could still use some help in the rotation. The problem with bringing Gordon back, depending on how the deal is structured, is there may not be much money left.

Still, Alex Gordon is still a Royal, and unless something goes terribly wrong, he will go down as one of the franchise’s best all-time players.
