Kansas City Chiefs: A Season Filled With Injuries

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a great turnaround this season, but the amount of injuries stacking up on this team has been troubling.

Sure, the KC Chiefs are in the middle of a nine game winning streak and clinched a playoff berth after starting the season 1-5, but man… The injuries they’ve sustained this year have sucked.

Early on in the year, the team lost Phillip Gaines due to an ACL injury. Gaines was lost for the season after a week three loss to Green Bay on Monday Night Football. While Gaines’ injury came at a convenient time (Sean Smith was coming off a suspension after that game), imagine how much scarier the Chiefs secondary could be with him, Smith, and rookie Marcus Peters out there.

The biggest injury this season though was the one to Jamaal Charles in a week five loss to the Bears. Charles went down in the second half and it didn’t look good right away. Fans later found out that the Pro Bowl running back had torn his ACL and his season was done.

  • At the time of Charles’ injury, things weren’t looking good for the Kansas City Chiefs. The last second loss to the Bears put them at 1-4 and losers of four straight games. Losing Charles for the year only added salt to the wound.

Honesty, the Chiefs have recovered just fine with Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware in the backfield, but there have still been a few more injuries on the team. Justin Houston hurt his knee in a week 12 match-up against Buffalo and has been out ever since.

Tamba Hali missed this past weekend’s game against Cleveland due to having surgery for a broken thumb. The Chiefs pass rush suffered tremendously without Hali and Houston, and it really just showed that Dee Ford isn’t ready to be a starter quite yet.

Speaking of Ford, he also saw a few weeks sitting out due to hurting his neck at warmups while in San Diego.

The Chiefs’ offensive line has seen a great deal of injuries too. Ben Grubbs has been out since before the win streak really began, and was placed on injured reserve.

The game against Buffalo saw the Chiefs get down to their last batch of linemen due to injuries. Mitch Morse went out with a concussion, which put Zach Fulton in at center, Eric Fisher left the game due to injury, as did Jeff Allen. Allen later had to re-enter the game due to Kansas City literally having no one else to throw out on the line.

Oh, and one of the biggest absences this season has been De’Anthony Thomas, who has been kept out since week 11 with a concussion. He was recently placed on the non-football illness list and is done for the season.

Despite all of these injuries, the Kansas City Chiefs have continued to win games and fought hard to earn their second playoff berth in only three seasons.

Let’s hope the Chiefs can actually make a run in the playoffs this year, which is something they haven’t been able to do since the early 90s.
