2015 NFL Mock Draft: KC Chiefs Select Cornerback

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs hold the 18th overall pick this Thursday night when the 2015 NFL Draft begins. In the mean time, Fansided.com held a 2015 NFL Mock Draft that saw each NFL site drafting for their respective team. Zac Snyder then compiled everyone’s picks and shared them with the world. The KC Chiefs’ selection was on the defensive side of the ball.

Matt Verderame of Arrowhead Addict projects the Kansas City Chiefs selecting cornerback Kevin Johnson with the 18th overall pick. I would be on board with this pick.

"“The Chiefs desperately need a corner to compliment Phillip Gaines and Sean Smith. Smith is likely to be suspended after pleading guilty to DUI, so the need becomes even more dire. Additionally, Kansas City is without a slot corner after allowing Chris Owens to leave via free agency. Johnson is a large, physical player who can play in Bob Sutton’s aggressive bump-and-run scheme. With Johnson, the Chiefs are getting a very good fit and elite athlete.”"

Well said Matt!

I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Johnson. He played on a losing team all throughout college and he’d definitely come into Kansas City excited to play for a winning team (well, hopefully). I even had the Kansas City Chiefs drafting Johnson in the second round during my last mock draft.

The rest of the mock draft was interesting, as teams were not allowed to trade, therefore several teams were left not fully content with their selection.

  • The Buccaneers took Jameis Winston first overall, and Marcus Mariota landed with the Tennessee Titans right after with the second pick. Division rival Oakland took Leonard Williams out of USC to add some fear to their defense. The other two AFC West opponents went with offensive options. The Chargers snagged top running back Melvin Gordon, and the Broncos took T.J. Clemmings out of Pittsburgh.

Back to Kevin Johnson though, he’d add a body to the secondary, which will need some help in 2015. The KC Chiefs will see some tough quarterbacks in the first few weeks of the season including Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Andy Dalton. All of these quarterbacks love to hurl the ball down the field, and that Chiefs secondary better be ready for the challenge.

Adding Kevin Johnson to this secondary is just insurance that the team will be okay should Sean Smith: A) Get suspended for a few games, as Matt mentioned in the blurb, and B) End up leaving after the season for a bigger contract than what the Chiefs offer him.

Is this the most popular pick? Probably not. Most fans want to see the Kansas City Chiefs draft a wide receiver in round one, but honestly, this draft is plenty deep receiver wise, so the Chiefs are better off scooping up one of the best corners in the draft early on.
