KC Chiefs: Where Four Chiefs Went In Pro-Bowl Draft

facebooktwitterreddit

The four KC Chiefs selected to the Pro-Bowl underwent a “draft” to choose up sides for the 2015 game in a two day draft held Tuesday and Wednesday. Captains Michael Irvin and Cris Carter picked players to fill pro-bowls squads like kids do on the playground.

The Pro-Bowl “draft” is part of a series of rule changes the NFL started in 2014 to try to liven up the game and make the showcase more competitive. This season’s draft follows the format established in the 2014 Pro-Bowl when Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice served as captains.

Tuesday the teams held a “pre-draft” to divvy up lineman, and special teams skill players. KC Chiefs NT Dontari Poe went to team Carter during this phase.

The choose ’em up came on Wednesday, with Cris Carter getting the first pick.

Jamaal Charles was the first Kansas City Chiefs player picked, going 5th overall to Cris Carter’s team. Charles followed (in order) QB Andrew Luck, QB Tony Romo,  WR A.J. Green, and WR Odell Beckham. Charles was the first running back selected.

Justin Houston was the second KC Chiefs player selected at no. 15 by team Carter, just after Bronco’s OLB Von Miller went to team Irvin. Tamba Hali went next as an “assigned” pick to team Carter after Irvin filled his outside linebacker roster limit by selecting OLB Elvis Dumervil at no. 34.

One good thing with all the Chiefs playing for team Carter, is Kansas City fans won’t have to watch KC Chiefs defenders tackle Jamaal Charles like Derrick Johnson did in the 2014 game.

Aside from choosing sides, the 2015 Pro-Bowl also is experimenting with other rules changes that could someday find their way into regular season games.

First, goal posts will only be 14 feet wide on extra points, as well as the line of scrimmage getting moved back from the 2 yard line to the 15—making the extra point a 33 yard kick.

The Pro Bowl will also somehow change the the width of goal posts for extra points (14 feet), back to the regular 18.6 feet span for regular field goals.

Second, each team will get two time outs per quarter, rather than 3 per half. If a team uses one (or less) time outs in the 1st or 3rd quarters, then the team will have three timeouts for the 2nd or 4th quarters.

These changes will be added to rule changes from the 2013 game which specified that the clock would stop on running plays less than one yard (except on sacks in the final two minutes of the game) and possession changes every quarter instead of each half.

To my mind, I welcome the rule changes. While ratings went down (again) last season, the 2013 game was far more competitive than the boring walk-throughs the game had become. Plus, the NFL can use the showcase game to experiment with rule changes that the rules committee is considering in games that don’t really matter.

Who knows? Maybe if they keep shaking things up enough, the NFL might find a formula that makes  the Pro Bowl actually worth watching.
