Kansas City Chiefs: Is Chase Daniel on His Way Out

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Terrelle Pryor on Wednesday night and now it’s time to wonder what the future holds for backup quarterback Chase Daniel. Daniel has started two games during his two years for the Chiefs and has looked decent in both of them.

It won’t be surprising if the Chiefs decide to part ways with Chase during the off season, as they’ll free up $3.8 million in cap space (thanks Sportrac) by doing so. In other words, releasing Daniel would help Kansas City out a lot because the Chiefs have some big name players they need to pay (i.e. Justin Houston) and also need to sign some players to help out in the weaker positions.

The Terrelle Pryor signing is foreshadowing of what we all figured might happen – the Chiefs are looking for other options to back up Alex Smith. The options other than Pryor are Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray, neither whom have taken a regular season snap. Both of those guys have suited up in one regular season game during their careers, but the organization seems to be excited about their futures.

There are several teams in the league that could use a quarterback like Daniel on their rosters so I don’t see him having any problem finding a new team. Chiefs fans would be sad to see Daniel go due to his days under center for the Missouri Tigers. Maybe Daniel could wind up with the St. Louis Rams, who more than likely will move on from Sam Bradford this season. A team like the Texans could also use a player like Daniel.

Now I’m not saying that Chase Daniel is starter material, but it’s been made pretty clear how important it is to have a solid backup quarterback in the pros. When Alex Smith had to sit out in the season finale, Daniel stepped up and took care of business against the San Diego Chargers.

One thing’s for sure. Chase Daniel has been well liked during his time with the Chiefs and while we’d love to see him stay in Kansas City, releasing him would help the team out. Getting Justin Houston’s deal done should be Kansas City’s biggest priority during the off season, which doesn’t bode well for Chase Daniel.

What do you think about Chase Daniel’s future with the Kansas City Chiefs?
