Both of these games will be televised on ESPN.

This and That

More from KC Kingdom

This will be the 28th meeting between the top two teams in college history in wins. Kentucky has a dominating lead in the series, winning 21 of those clashes. The two titans first played in 1950, and the Wildcats won 16 of the first 17 meetings through 1984. (Series history from BigBlueHistory.com)

Since then, each team is 5-5 but Kentucky beat Kansas twice in the 2011-2012 season, including in the Champions Classic, then again in the National Championship game.

Kansas didn’t look particularly good beating UC Santa Barbara by ten points earlier in the week. They only connected on 41.5% of the field goal attempts, and just two of their ten attempts from behind the arc. (stats courtesy of KUSports.com).

Freshman Devonte Graham led the Jayhawks with 14 points, and junior fowards Jamari Traylor and Perry Ellis each pulled down ten rebounds.

It was more than just their poor shooting that led to an unevenly played first outing. The Jayhawks seldom looked comfortable as a team throughout the whole game. It is a very young team, with no scholarship seniors, and there has been a lot of turnover, so it may take some time for these Jayhawks to start working as a cohesive unit.

Unfortunately, Kansas will have to grow up quickly. The Jayhawks are going to have to show some great improvements if they hope to beat the Kentucky Wildcats.

Top recruit Kelly Oubre saw just four minutes of play in the season opener for the Jayhawks. He recorded 2 rebounds, an assist, and a turnover, but did not score. Kansas needs the youngster to contribute much more in the future. His raw talent and athleticism will be needed against a very deep Kentucky squad.

When these two teams meet, it is always an event as they are the bluest of the college basketball blue bloods. Let’s hope for another highly entertaining and competitive game.
