Should the Kansas City Chiefs Draft a Tight End

In less than two weeks, the 2014 NFL Draft will be underway and Kansas City Chiefs fans will eagerly be watching as their team drafts new guys to improve the team. With six picks in this draft, Kansas City can take several different approaches. Many think the team will focus on getting a wide receiver as well as a few other spots on defense.
What about the tight end position? For years, Chiefs fans basked in the glory of having an elite tight end in Tony Gonzalez, who was the star tight end all teams dreamed of having.
The Chiefs don’t necessarily have a “star” tight end right now. Kansas City currently has Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce, Sean McGrath, Richard Gordon, and Demetrius Harris on their roster. Would it be in their best interest to select a tight end in this year’s draft?
Fasano came to Kansas City last offseason from the Indianapolis Colts. He played in nine games during his first year as a Chief and had 23 catches for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Fasano’s biggest problem last year was battling injuries.
Kelce was a 2013 third round draft pick out of Cincinnati. There was a lot of potential in that Kelce could become the “star” tight end that teams need these days. Kelce, similar to Fasano, battled injuries.
He was hurt during preseason and was placed on injured reserve so he never played in a regular season game last year. Hopefully Kelce can avoid injuries this year because Kansas City needs him to step up.
McGrath was the third string tight end and ended up being a pretty solid player for the Chiefs. He played in 13 games last season and started in eight of them. McGrath ended his 2013 season with 26 catches for 302 and two touchdowns.

Gordon and Harris didn’t do a whole lot for the Chiefs last year, but they are currently still on the roster.
The chances of Kansas City selecting a tight end in the first round are pretty slim, but what if top prospects Eric Ebron or Jace Amaro are still available when the Chiefs are on the clock? Should Kansas City select one of them?
If the Chiefs decide to take a tight end this year, they more than likely won’t do so until the later rounds. Some of the sixth and seventh round prospects the Chiefs could land are names like Larry Webster, Richard Rodgers, Blake Annen, and Marcel Jensen.
Annen is out of Cincinnati (where Kelce played) so maybe that will be some sort of encouragement to take him, who knows?
