Realistic Linebacker Options for KC Chiefs

3. Asante Samuel Jr. (Florida State)

Now we’re onto the players who I’d be okay with the Chiefs taking in the first round. Asante Samuel Jr. out of Florida State projects as a late first-round pick and while he doesn’t offer the size most teams would want out of a cornerback, there’s no question that he’s been able to rise above that.

Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus wrote that Samuel “may be the single most gifted mover in the cornerback class when you consider speed, burst, agility, change-of-direction ability and leaping ability. He could be described as “plus” in all of those categories.”

Pretty high praise right there. Samuel could fit in well with the Chiefs defense, as he’s someone who could play both on the outside and in the slot if needed. Steve Spagnuolo would love having a versatile cornerback to add to his defense, and Samuel would fit that mold perfectly. He’d be an excellent addition to the Kansas City Chiefs’ secondary.

2. Caleb Farley (Virginia Tech)

Caleb Farley is arguably the most intriguing prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s been listed as a top 10 prospect by The Draft Network, but also sometimes falls to the end of the first round in mock drafts. The reason for his intrigue is that Farley was the first college football player to opt-out of the 2020 season and therefore hasn’t played a snap since 2019.

When he did play, Farley was a top-notch talent at the position, locking down a total of six interceptions through two seasons. He also defended 19 passes and had 56 tackles during his two seasons with the Hokies.

Farley has suffered injuries throughout his career too, so that, mixed with not playing in a year and a half makes him a risky pick for teams selecting in the first half of round one. For the Chiefs at pick 31, however, he’d be well worth the risk and would be a great value selection.
