KC Chiefs to move on from – Damien Williams (Running Back)

Perhaps no player who opted out of the 2020 season absence was felt less than running back Damien Williams. Maybe it was the fact the Chiefs gave his number to Le’Veon Bell or that they drafted Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round of last year’s draft.

Or perhaps it was the continued presence of Darrel Williams in the backfield, carrying the load for the offense while CEH was out. Whatever the reason, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which the veteran running back returns in 2021.

The release of Williams saves the Chiefs $2.175 million against the cap.

Considering the value the Chiefs have in the other players at the position, I don’t know why the team needs him back.  The money alone can be used to help bring in some depth pieces along the defense or help land a No. 2 receiver that can actually see the field and produce.

The Chiefs are counting on their other opt-outs returning and contributing in 2021, but I don’t see how Williams fits into future plans.
