What did we learn about the Los Angeles Chargers?

Justin Herbert shockingly made his first ever NFL start and did so against the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. He played really well too, almost good enough for the win, but never count out the Chiefs down double digits in the fourth quarter.

The Chargers defensive line were all over Patrick Mahomes from the jump in this one and it led to the home team having a 17-6 lead over the champs midway through the third quarter. LAC has always matched up well against the Chiefs and without Philip Rivers’ extra interceptions (miss you, Philip), it became harder to find scoring opportunities.

Los Angeles is just fine without Melvin Gordon, as Austin Ekeler and rookie Joshua Kelley have stepped up nicely in 2 games this season. Both were terrors not only on the ground, but through the air as well.

What we learned about the Chargers is that they barely scraped out a win in week 1 to move to 1-0 and then were the better team for 3 and a half quarters in week 2, but lost and are now 1-1 and third in the division. I’m still baffled as to why the Chargers didn’t go for it on fourth down in overtime. Why on Earth would you give the ball back to Patrick Mahomes?

We also learned that Herbert is a good athlete and has a chance to be the next long-term signal caller for the Chargers. It was only 1 game, of course, but he looked legit.

Next up for the Bolts: They’ll remain in LA to host the 0-2 Carolina Panthers in the later window of games.
