Pros to Patrick Mahomes’ Contract

The Chiefs future is now tied up in one single player that they are hoping will deliver them to the promise land again and again. That sounds like a risky proposition, but it is really the simplest choice in the world when that player is Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs have taken one of the largest steps in recent history to secure their future; A future that promises more AFC West dominance, more playoff wins, and more Super Bowls.

Mahomes signed a cap friendly contract. Now, I am no sports agent, and a lot is lost on me when it comes to the cap, contracts, and things of that nature, but the way I understand it is that Mahomes’ contract is not tied to the cap.

When the cap rises in the coming years as it is expected to, Mahomes will not be set to receive a certain percentage of the cap regardless of how high it gets. This gives the Chiefs more flexibility in making sure other players get paid, meaning that despite the eye popping number, Mahomes actually signed a very team friendly contract.

This goes hand in hand with another large pro, which is that the team friendly contract gives the Chiefs more flexibility in the signing of other star players such as Travis Kelce when his contract talks begin probably next offseason.

Indeed the way the contract was structured, Mahomes will continue to get paid and the team will continue to be able to afford to put the best players around him.

Mahomes is incredibly talented, but still so young at only 24. He has not even come close to reaching his ceiling and will only get even better (if you can imagine such a thing) meaning this is a strong long-term investment for the Chiefs.

Not only is it a long-term investment for the Chiefs, it is a long-term decision for Mahomes, for it seems as though he is planting his steak in the ground, and this gives him the stability of being able to build a home and a family here in Kansas City.
