The Chargers pose a dominant backfield.

While Melvin Gordon held out over the first four games of the season, Chargers backup running back Austin Ekeler stood in for him. During that time Ekeler put up good numbers, particularly in the receiving game:

  • Rush Attempts: 56
  • Rush Yards: 220 (3.93 avg/car)
  • Rush Touchdowns: 3
  • Passing Targets: 25
  • Receptions: 24
  • Reception Yards: 270
  • Receiving Touchdowns: 3

Since Gordon has returned to action, he has progressed weekly and looking more of the back you would expect to see coming out of the off-season and training camp. In just a matter of six games played, Gordon has racked up over 300 yards and four touchdowns on the ground averaging around 3.5 yards per carry.

While the time share may look more along the lines of a Gordon 60/ Ekeler 40, either player is capable of breaking off the big play at any moment. The duo of Gordon and Ekeler will be a tough match-up for an on and off rushing defense for the Chiefs.

Slowing these guys down out of the backfield as both runners and pass catchers will be a huge factor in this week’s Monday Night primetime game.
