Roster Hole: No. 2 Tight End

Available Free Agent: Jermaine Gresham

Aside from superstar Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs are weak at tight end. If the team wanted to run a two-tight-end set next season, the current choices to line up with Kelce would be guys like the following:

  • Deon Yelder, who appeared in three games last season;
  • John Lovett, a quarterback by trade out of Princeton;
  • Joe Fortson, an undrafted rookie out of Valdosta State;
  • David Wells, entering his second year in the league; or
  • Blake Bell, who has 30 career receptions over four seasons.

Not exactly an inspiring squad. The Chiefs would be better off on taking a flier on Jermaine Gresham, a nine-year veteran who turns 31 next month.

Originally drafted in the first round out of Oklahoma by the Bengals in 2010, Gresham spent the past four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Last year was by far his worst as he only collected nine receptions for 94 yards and no scores, yet he still had his moments in the blocking game.

For his career, though, Gresham averages 41.8 catches for 416.8 yards and 3.2 receiving touchdowns per season. In the past three seasons, Kansas City Chiefs tight ends not named Travis Kelce–so, Demetrius Harris, Ross Travis, and James O’Shaughnessy–have averaged 19 receptions for 189.3 yards and 1.6 touchdown receptions per season.

Gresham, despite being on the north side of 30, is an upgrade on those numbers. And he’s an upgrade on every tight end currently on the roster besides Kelce. Due to his age and injury history, he would come cheaply and instantly add another receiving weapon to Patrick Mahomes‘ disposal.
