Scenario 3: Chiefs Stay Put

This scenario may well prove to be the most likely to actually happen.

This draft has a ton of defensive talent in the first two rounds, and that is where the Chiefs have the most need and their most picks. At 29, a slew of players could be available for the Chiefs to select here, and Veach could benefit from quarterbacks who are less polished such as Dwayne Haskins, Drew Lock, and Daniel Jones being picked early in the first, pushing more NFL ready and elite defenders to the back end.

Players to watch here would be cornerbacks such as Byron Murphy, Deandre Baker, and Greedy Williams. Corner is a position of need and depending how they go off the board, the Chiefs could be in prime position to pick any one of these three. Another interesting prospect could be Michigan State corner Justin Layne. Veach no doubt has a preference here, but he will keep that about as close to the vest as possible.

Other defensive players who could potentially be available on the back end of the draft include Jeffrey Simmons, Dexter Lawrence, and Nasir Adderley. Adderley is a particularly intriguing prospect out of Delaware. Some scouts are wary that his level of competition will hurt his draft stock, but most agree he is an athletic, rangy safety who can cover and as well as make plays in the running game.

Considering the Chiefs also tried to add Earl Thomas in the offseason, safety could be the pick here, especially if Adderley is available. If the Chiefs stay put, they will go defense here. Byron Murphy, cornerback from Washington, could be the best corner in the draft, and the Chiefs scoop him up here at 29th overall.
