Scenario 2: Trade up in the Draft

This scenario will play a lot like scenario one. A run on certain positions pushes back quality players, but in this instance, one of Veach’s targets starts to slide. Picks in the late teens start rolling around, and the target is still there. This is when Veach will start working the phones like mad, offering the Chiefs first rounder and maybe a 3rd round selection to move up.

Don’t expect this move to be made for an offensive prospect. I think Veach knows he still needs to upgrade the defense, and even though he has a “best player available” mentality, he won’t give up extra selections to get someone on the offensive side of the ball.

Instead, expect one of the many edge rushers in this draft to start falling. Guys like Clelin Ferrell of Clemson or Montez Sweat of Mississippi State could take a draft day slide allowing Veach to pounce. I believe Montez Sweat in particular could take a tumble.

Trending. Chiefs as Avengers. light

Players like Ed Oliver, Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams, Christian Wilkins, Nick Bosa and Josh Allen could all go before Sweat. The scenario I see playing out is Sweat falling to number 18, where the Minnesota Vikings are selecting.

The Chiefs would trade pick 29 and pick 92 (3rd Round) for pick number 18. The Chiefs would select Sweat, and still have two 2nd rounders to work with. The Vikings could move back to 29, with the hope of selecting a player like Garrett Bradburry out of N.C. State. Center is a position of need for the Vikings, and Bradburry might be the most pro ready player in the draft.

Taking him at 18 could be a stretch, so the Vikings get their guy, fill a position of need, and pick up an extra pick. The Chiefs pair Sweat with Chris Jones and address their push rush need, and both teams win here.
