ROUND 3: PICK 28 (92ND OVERALL)

Truth be told – The KC Chiefs don’t need to draft a running back in the 2019 NFL Draft. That being said, this is a mock draft of (mostly) taking the best available player and Damien Harris out of Alabama was the best available with the 92nd overall pick.

It’s not as if Chiefs fans would be upset with this pick either, given Harris’ college resumé. Harris spent all four years with the Crimson Tide and had two seasons where he rushed for over 1,000 yards.

This past season, Harris carried the ball 150 times for 876 yards and nine touchdowns. The season prior, he had 135 carries for 1,000 yards even and 11 touchdowns. He did split carries with Joshua Jacobs, another draft prospect, but the good news is that Harris wouldn’t have to carry the load, at least not as a rookie.

The Chiefs don’t need a starter at running back, as they have Damien Williams in that role for at least the next two years. They also signed Carlos Hyde in free agency earlier this offseason and have Darryl Williams as well.

Despite all three of those guys being available at the position, running back is a position where injuries occur, so drafting a young buck like Harris isn’t a crazy idea whatsoever.

What analysts are saying:

"Damien Harris would be a welcome addition into any NFL backfield, as long as his round value and expectations are tempered accordingly. Harris will never be a top back in the NFL, though he is able to handle a lion’s share of the touches, simply because his athletic profile limits him from creating enough for himself. -Benjamin Solak, The Draft Network"
