The Chiefs certainly can’t use all their selections on defense. It simply won’t work. The Chiefs, if they want to continue to be successful and win games, they must not forget to add developmental youth.

Hakeem Butler out of Iowa State is a huge target for a wide receiver (6-5/225) and can certainly move and add a target in the middle of the field for Mahomes to find.

After the 2018 season, the oft-injured De’Anthony Thomas, the ever disappointing Chris Conley, and the enigmatic Demetrius Harris are all free agents. Tyreek Hill is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2019 season and Sammy Watkins‘ contract allows the Chiefs to move on from him after the 2019 season (free agent after the 2020 season).

Depth is certainly needed and that’s why adding a talented wideout in round two could make perfect sense. The Chiefs want to keep providing a slew of weapons for Patrick Mahomes.

Being proactive allows the Chiefs to not be in a position of desperation, allowing the Iowa State product to develop while players like Kelce, Hill and Watkins take most of the attention. As is often the case it can take a year or two for a wide receiver to truly and fully develop, this is a pick about immediate depth and future starter.
