Secondary

It’s always hard to read the story that the preseason writes. Many times plays and players alike are held back in these somewhat meaningless games. No coach wants to injure players or giveaway the playbook before the season even starts.

The preseason can cause concern as well, just like it did for Chiefs Kingdom after the preseason game against the Chicago Bears. The now Bears’ head coach and former Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, decided to hold out his first stringers for this game. Unfortunately, this gave his backups the opportunity to make Kansas City’s first-string defense look pretty sorry.

From Bob Sutton’s ability as defensive coordinator to Eric Berry’s health after the injury to a completely revamped secondary fans are rightfully concerned. Most troubling seems to be the secondary in which the most talented guys are a slot corner and one who has struggled with injuries. There might be a chance that Brett Veach could bring in some talent before the regular season starts, but that seems unlikely to happen quick enough to correct what the secondary lacks.

With the Chargers having Philip Rivers and Keenan Allen and the Raiders having Derek Carr and Amari Cooper it only complicates the path to a third straight division title. Playing teams like the Steelers, Rams, and Texans can also serve to draw attention to how weak the Chiefs secondary might be. If Kansas City can’t patch up the leaky secondary very soon, fans might have to come to terms with their defensive expectations this year.
