Quarterback Patrick Mahomes

The Chiefs went big when trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes with the number ten overall pick in the in 2017 NFL Draft. Fans were pretty well divided over whether or not the former Texas Tech gunslinger could transfer his talents from the college level to the pro level. Until Mahomes has some more games that matter under his belt, the jury is still out.

Any fan can see why the hype with Mahomes is real. Mahomes landed in a pretty incredible situation. Being surrounded by a great supporting cast as well as having a coach who knows a thing or two about winning has already seemed to help make the quarterback more pro ready. After spending a year in wait behind a consistent, if unspectacular, quarterback, Mahomes has hopefully cut out some of those first-year woes.

But Chiefs fans should look at the upcoming season logically. After all, this is only Mahomes’ second season and his first one in which he is the starting quarterback. He likes to throw bombs, but he’s also no stranger to creating turnovers. In his lone start during the 2017 season, he finished with zero touchdowns and one interception, which should cause fans to temper their expectations.

The ceiling is certainly high with Mahomes at the helm, but cautious optimism should abound. Fans should be excited and look for big plays to be made with Hunt, Hill, and Kelce. Fans should also not be too disappointed if this season lacks chemistry as it is Mahomes’ first real season with this talented group.
