ROUND 3: PICK 22 (86TH OVERALL) – ANTHONY AVERETT, CB (ALABAMA)

Next to the pass rush, a big concern for the Kansas City Chiefs this past season was in the secondary, predominantly at the cornerback position. Darrelle Revis came in and shored things up somewhat in the second half of the season, but outside of him and Marcus Peters, it’s time to get some more help.

With that, the Chiefs decide to draft Anthony Averett out of Alabama with their second pick. This is a pick that definitely addresses a position of need and Averett had a nice career with the Crimson Tide, racking up two National Championships in his three years spent at the university.

Averett recorded 48 tackles (four for loss), eight defended passes, one sack, and one interception during his 2017 campaign. What stands out the most about Averett is that he’s a tackling machine, a rarity for a lot of corners in the NFL these days.

The Chiefs struggled to actually finish through with tackles last season and that’s why Averett would be a nice addition to the defense. He totaled 98 tackles throughout three seasons at Alabama and while he’s not a turnover machine like Peters is, he can bring down defenders.

Drafting players from Alabama does kind of scare me at times, but Anthony Averett seems like the type of player who could benefit from a year of not starting. Once Revis is gone (assuming he is still in KC for 2018), slot him in across from Peters and see how it goes.
