Kansas City Chiefs: Coaching Carousel Opportunities

Detroit Lions

There haven’t been any rumors to link a Kansas City Chiefs assistant to the Detroit Lions yet, but it could make some sense. The Lions decided to part ways with Jim Caldwell after missing the playoffs this year. The Detroit ownership is looking for someone that can lead the team into the postseason, and Caldwell wasn’t getting it done.

Detroit has an interesting situation for any incoming head coach. Matt Stafford is firmly set as the starting quarterback after signing a new contract this year. That is a huge load off the shoulders of the head coach right away. There is also plenty of offensive and defensive talent to work with.

Matt Nagy: From a situational perspective, I don’t really think Matt Nagy makes a lot of sense in Detroit. However, the Fords do tend to step in with these decisions. If they are wanting to find the next Sean McVay, then Nagy could be a target.

Dave Toub: It’s rare for special teams coaches to get head coaching opportunities, but Dave Toub’s name has been mentioned for years. That could get the Lions to look in his direction. I’m not sure that I can see Detroit going after a veteran coordinator with no head coaching experience though.
