Kansas City Chiefs: Head coach opportunities for KC assistants
By Ben Almquist
With the NFL coaching carousel underway, many teams are preparing to lose top assistants. The Kansas City Chiefs have two that may get head coaching jobs.
Black Monday has come and gone, and there are no shortage of new NFL head coaching vacancies. For the Kansas City Chiefs, that means there are new opportunities to lose some of their top coordinators. When you’re a successful team in the NFL, the competition is always going to be looking at your assistant coaches.
For the Chiefs, this is nothing new during the Andy Reid era. Over the past few years there have always been rumors linking key members of the organization to top jobs. Normally, this has been in regards to general manager spots, but coaching connections have been mentioned as well.
Most notably, two years ago, Kansas City has lost former offensive coordinator Doug Pederson to the Eagles. Pederson has had success in his efforts with Philadelphia, getting them the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs this year. That kind of success will only encourage other teams to target the Chiefs coordinators.
This offseason, the top two targets for the rest of the league will be offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and special teams coach Dave Toub. Both are highly respected throughout the league, and have been popular names early on. They will certainly be brought in to interview for a number of positions.
Andy Reid Coaching Tree

Not all of Andy Reid’s “disciples” have been successful, but they do get opportunities. Steve Spagnuolo, Brad Childress, Leslie Frazier, Pat Shurmur, and Marty Mornhinweg all led other NFL organizations, but were unable to find success. However, the fact that the rest of the league thought enough of Reid to go after them speaks volumes.
As for the current opportunities, here are five that are most intriguing for the Kansas City Chiefs:
