Kansas City Chiefs: 5 Reasons Mahomes Won’t Start Sunday

#1 Patrick Mahomes Simply Isn’t Ready

Yes, I hate to be the bearer of bad news to all you hopeful Kansas City Chiefs fans, but it is very possible that Patrick Mahomes simply isn’t ready to go yet. We all knew that Mahomes was going to require time to get up to speed. There just isn’t any way for us to know how far along he is in that development.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes has all of the physical talent in the world. However, he still has a lot of the finer points of the position to learn. Not to mention the complex West Coast Offense that Andy Reid runs. Mahomes hasn’t been able to put much time into that as he has been running the scout team in practices so far this year.

One of the things you have to trust Andy Reid on is where his quarterback is in terms of readiness. You don’t want to set Patrick Mahomes back in his development. There are a lot of things the Chiefs coaching staff has to work with their young quarterback on. If he isn’t ready to take the field yet, then it would be wise to keep him on the sidelines.

By locking up their spot in the postseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have given themselves some options for the final game of the season. Putting Patrick Mahomes on the field for this game makes a lot of sense, but there are reasons to not go that route as well. We’ll see what Andy Reid and his staff decides to do.
