Kansas City Chiefs: 5 Reasons Mahomes Won’t Start Sunday

#4 Building Up Alex Smith’s Trade Value

There is another reason to build up Alex Smith’s stats, and that is to help the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason. It seems like the worst kept secret in the NFL that the Chiefs intend to try and trade Smith after 2017. He should fetch a solid return, but there is still some time to boost that trade stock just a little bit more.

Alex Smith has already helped his trade stock by hitting the 4000 yard passing mark. Especially since he’s done so by being one of the most effective downfield passers in the NFL this year. However, there is another mark that would help Smith’s value out some more. If the Chiefs quarterback can hit 30 touchdowns on the year, it adds more value.

Trade value won’t be something that Andy Reid is thinking about right now. It certainly wouldn’t be his reasoning for keeping Patrick Mahomes on the bench. At the same time, Alex Smith would need four touchdown passes on Sunday to get to 30. That will be tough against the Broncos defense.
