Common Alex Smith complaints I have heard this season that make no sense

“Just start Mahomes already!”

I can answer this one fairly quickly – no. Second string quarterback Patrick Mahomes teased us in the preseason with his cannon for an arm, his scrambling, and his patented across-his-chest passes.

Owning such a talent on the sidelines is tempting, although Mahomes is not ready to be the starting quarterback. The Chiefs made it clear despite trading up 17 spots to acquire Mahomes, they are still 100% with Smith being the starter, and Mahomes will be a project, a. project worth waiting for.

Hence the word project here, folks. Mahomes needs the time to develop, the time to adjust to the NFL lifestyle, the time to practice, the time to understand the offense, after coming from a pass heavy offense in college.

“The Chiefs made it clear despite trading up 17 spots to acquire Mahomes, that they are still 100% with Smith being the starter, and Mahomes will be a project.”

Mahomes has the chance to be a very successful quarterback in the NFL. He has the calibers, the mindset, and the arm strength, and that is not a hidden fact. To mix his gunslinger mentality, and Smith’s conservative passing style – I find Mahomes to be in the perfect company to be a franchise quarterback.

But, just not yet. Once again, hence the word project. Do not rush this project – he is on pace to start in the near future, just not right now. In the long run, Mahomes is a project worth waiting for, and that is what makes it fun. But, Smith is still my starting quarterback.
